Woz_a asked:

A Wind blows across a hill, has done since time inmomorial, that wind is part of the global weather system, so someone comes along and builds a wind farm on the hill, most of the energy is removed from the wind, what effect does that have on the global weather system?
Wave power, many years ago it was demonstrated that wave farms caused or increased costal erosion at a point some distance from the “farm”.
Geothermal, taking heat from the earths crust, what will be the long term effect of this accelerated cooling?
Solar, the production cost of photovoltaic cells has been questioned elswhere but what about heat extraction. placing large solar powered boilers in the desert may seem like a good idea but what are the effects on the flora, fauna and geology of removing that heat source?
maybe the sun will go out before the effects are apreciable but has anyone ever done any reasearch in to the down side of “green” energy?

Air conditioner fan motor stops - window unit?

Ordog asked:

I recently purchased a place - the former owner was nuts, cut the cords on the window units and did some other stuff. The main window unti, is a 200 Kenmore, old. I replaced the cord, and nice cool air blew out - but after a bit on high, the motor started making a noise… and it stopped turning. Well I got it to run on low for a bit, after i made sure it had oil in the motor… it would run fine if i reached in and spun the fan a bit… it also tries to run if i push “up” on the fan… it is clean inside, oiled, etc. I hope I dont need a new motor….. everything else on it works like it is new.
It is like something is out of balance.. when I got it running on low a minute ago, it was fine until i started to slide it back into the case, then it went haywire and stopped

How to Make your Refrigerator Run More Efficiently

August 28th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Home And Family
r-22 refrigerant
Johnny Waymire asked:

Most people don’t realize how much electricity a refrigerator uses. Unlike most household appliances, a refrigerator is working hard all the time. It is a heat pump, pumping heat out of the freezer, and using a fan to cool off the refrigerator unit. So, if you want to save money on your utility bill, you should make sure that your refrigerator is running at top efficiency.

The more efficient your refrigerator is, the less energy it will use. And that, of course, saves you money. Sometimes, the best way to make an old refrigerator more efficient is to simply get rid of it, and replace it with an Energy Star compliant new model. The savings on your electric bill can be substantial. Additionally, features such as automatic defrosting consume electricity as well. Modern designs are more energy efficient, and so replacing an old refrigerator almost always makes a great deal of sense.

Of course, whether your refrigerator is new or old, there are always other things that you can do to improve its efficiency. Is your freezer full? It should be. A full freezer is easier to keep cold. Filling milk jugs with tap water about two thirds the way up will eventually provide a nice block of ice that will help keep your freezer cold with minimal use of energy. And, in case of a black out, the jugs of frozen water will help keep other things in the freezer cold longer. Best of all, in case of a severe emergency — think hurricane season — the jugs of water can be thawed out and used. Remember, when you fill up those jugs to put in the freezer, don’t fill them all the way to the top. Water expands when it freezes. Two thirds full should be just fine.

Speaking of water, open water evaporates and condenses in a refrigerator. This makes the refrigerator work harder, and also tends to drip little annoying drops of water on your hands whenever you reach for something on the top shelf. So, if you put something wet into the fridge, make sure it is covered.

Another handy method of making your refrigerator more efficient is to use the “energy saver” setting on your refrigerator’s controls. The controls can be found on the inside of the refrigerator unit, often on the refrigerator’s “ceiling.” Try different settings, and be sure to use a refrigerator thermometer to make sure the settings keep your food cold, between 35 and 37 degrees fahrenheit, or around 2 degrees celsius. While you’re at it, get a freezer thermometer as well. The freezer should be around 0 degrees fahrenheit, -18 celsius. Check both thermometers regularly, particularly during the summer.

When opening the doors to your refrigerator and freezer, make sure you’ve already got a pretty good idea what you’re looking for. Keeping the door open while you “take inventory” is a bad habit that you should try to break. Know what’s in your refrigerator, and where it’s located. Refrigerator and freezer doors are kept closed with magnetic strips. The magnetic strips are embedded in a rubber seal around the door. Keep the seals clean. Debris on the seal can let air in and out, compromising the air tightness and making the refrigerator work harder.

You can test for good seals by slipping a dollar bill in between the door and the fridge. Close the door, and try to take the dollar bill out. If it’s easy to remove, your seals need cleaning. After cleaning, try using silicone spray to revitalize the old rubber on the seals. If this doesn’t improve things, you might want to see if you can get the seals replaced. You can order replacement refrigerator seals online, or by phone, from your refrigerator’s manufacturer.

Bob Vila recommends that you put replacement seals in the clothes dryer for a few minutes to warm them. Warming, he says, removes the crimps that come from being packed in the shipping box. And while your keeping the door clean, be sure to vacuum around the coils. The refrigerator coils are usually either on the back of the unit, or on the bottom of it. The coils are essential working parts of your refrigerator — they are how the refrigerator dissipates the heat that it is pumping out of the interior. Dirty coils don’t dissipate heat well, because the dirt acts like an insulator. Clean coils do what they’re supposed to do — dissipate heat at maximum efficiency.

These simple maintenance tips should make your refrigerator live a healthy, energy efficient life. And you’ll notice the difference on your utility bill.

Carrier Runs ‘Green’ In Bejing Olympic Games

August 28th, 2008 by rdouglass | No Comments | Filed in 'Green' Products & Services

According to a release on Carrier’s web site here, they were both a major supplier of HVAC contracts to the 2008 Bejing Summer Olympic Games AND applied evironmentally aware technologies.  From their article:

Carrier Corp., a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX), achieved another milestone in its connection to the 2008 Beijing Games, securing nearly 70 percent of all heating, ventilating and air-conditioning contracts for the venues. Carrier supplied a full line of integrated systems to the Summer Games facilities, ranging from AquaSnap® air-cooled chillers with Puron® refrigerant to large centrifugal chillers to air-handling units, fan coil units and the Carrier Comfort Network (CCN) controls system.

The “Water Cube” National Aquatics Center, one of the major venues for the Beijing Games, utilizes four Carrier centrifugal chillers, a control network and air-side products. Carrier’s innovative technology recovers more than 50 percent of the exhaust heat in the aquatics center and then uses it to warm the swimming pool. “This technology reduces heat emission in the environment as well as the energy consumed for heating,” stated Ross Shuster, president, Carrier Building Systems and Services, Asia…

Geothermal question?

B U S Y asked:

I have geothermal heating and cooling. Now, when we bought the house they told us the best thing to do is leave the a/c on auto, keep windows doors closed and leave the temperature alone. When you adjust it and turn it on and off, you are making it work harder to get back up or down to the right temp. SO this is what Ive been doing. Seems to work well, keeps costs low. Do you agree or should I try opening the windows on cooler days?

Top 7 Ways to Keep Your Air Conditioner Running Properly

August 27th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Examine the outside condensing unit
Initially, you’ll want to ensure that the condensing unit isn’t being covered, so that it can draw air into the cooling system to cool the insides of the home. If you’ve temporarily stored items near or on the condensing unit, you’ll want to remove them, so that the unit can function at a higher capacity.

Check out your air conditioner ahead of time
Before you need your air conditioner, it may be a good idea to turn it on and let it run for a few minutes. There’s nothing worse than finding that your air conditioner isn’t functioning properly on the sweltering days of summer. Check out how your air conditioner is running before the warm season, and beat the heat.

Routinely change your air filters
Regularly changing air filters are of the utmost importance when it comes to air conditioning maintenance. Filters that aren’t clean reduce efficiency and block air flow to your home. Keeping clean filters not only will keep your home cooler, but it will also save you money on costly repairs.

Inspect the access panels
Perform a check to ensure that access panels are in place and properly secured.

Check for Impediments
Remove all observable impediments near the exterior of the unit.

Check the mode
Your thermostat should be set to cooling mode, as opposed to heat mode if you want your home to get cooler.

Outsource cleaning the air conditioning system
If you want your air conditioner to operate at its highest level of efficiency, you’ll have to keep it clean. Though it may not seem like a problem, homeowners shouldn’t clean the system themselves using water, due to risks associated with electrical shock. If possible, homeowners should contact an experienced air condition repair and services technician to handle the job for them.
