we are thinking about installing a geothermal system, it’s sounds ‘to good to be true’ 65% savings on oil for $13000 (1400 sq ft. home) after government grant. my husband says it would skyrocket our hydro bill. does anyone have a system and what are your experiences please!

What is the process to install a geothermal heat exchange system for residential heating and ac?

mcg asked:

Our home is in Minnesota and was built in 1907. We heat our house with a gas/forced-air furnace (less than 10-years old) and seek information on how we might retrofit to a geothermal heating and cooling system. How much a pool or coil is needed per sq/ft of heated/cooled interior space ? Is the installation expensive?

Do you have Geothermal Heating? If so, do you like it?

Jenny~♥ asked:

My husband and I are looking at a house with Geothermal Heating. It was originally a beautiful home, but the previous owners neglected it and damaged the inside. It has a private pond and an ugly yard fountain, which I would want to tear out - however we were just told it has something to do with the heating. The house also has a wood burning stove. Is the Geothermal not sufficient enough to keep the house warm? I am not a woodburning stove fan. How do you like your Geothermal system? Does it keep your house warm?

High efficiency inspection for house?

Jen♥Cubs asked:

We can get a high efficiency certificate for our new house if we pay $300 for the inspection (and thus have a large tax deduction). However, the inspector said that out of all the houses he inspected this year, only two met his criteria. Does anyone know what to expect specifically? We are all electric with geothermal ac/heat, 2×6 exterior walls, double paned windows, sprayed in insulation…not sure what all he is going to be looking for.

Question: How to cool down 2 bedroom condo that is soundproofed (next to airport) in winter?

Sleepless in Chicago asked:

Condo is fully soundproofed (ie no air leakage).
During the winter months, have radiant floor heat (water based). Have already turned that way down (10%). Open windows at least once a week during the day to ‘cool down’. It is hard to sleep due to airplane noise if window is open at night. Have ceiling fan in bedroom (where it is too warm).
Have humidifier in bedroom. Also have an air cleaner in bedroom. Have been told not to run air conditioner in winter. Live near Chicago, IL. I do not run the heater (air handler) during the winter months.

Problem: How to cool down the bedroom to 64 - 68 degrees F during the winter? The bedroom is at 71-74 degrees F typically. Have already tried opening the window before going to bed. The room will cool down to about 64 degrees F but when the window is closed it will heat back up at a rate of 2-3 degrees per hour. I also do not like the ceiling fan on medium or high while sleeping (allergies). A window air conditioner will not work.

I’ve been told I need 10-11 tons of heat pumps to heat/cool my house but only 4T in geothermal. Is this right?

D Squared asked:

I live in the Appalachian Mtns. & do not have the temp. extremes. Natural gas is not available, electricity is reasonably priced. My under const. home is 5500 sq. ft on 2 floors 1 of which is a walkout basement that is 1/2 exposed & frame.
I have 9′ ceilings & some vaulted ceilings. I have been told by 3 heat pump companies that I need a 5 ton down & at least a 5 up but two 3 ton units would be better.
I received a quote from a geothermal co. using one 4 ton unit.
One of the heat pump men said that he thinks geo requires twice the tonnage as air source.
The geo man checked R- ratings in the walls & fenestration values from the windows when he made his calculations, the heat pump guys mainly used sq. footage allowing for a well insulated house.
No one else in this area knows about geothermal.
Thanks for your input.

I got an old window air conditioner at a yardsale. Is it okay to use?

Mandy asked:

The yardsale seller said that it worked. It’s a Whirpool, which I know is a reliable brand. My husband is worried about it being dangerous to use a window unit that is 20+ years old. I plan to clean it out first. Is there any danger?

We are building a new home. 3300 heated living space. I know geothermal costs more up front to install than an oil heating system - but is geothermal heating all that it is cracked up to be? will it be cheaper/more efficient than oil heat? any other thoughts would be welcome. thanks!

Want to heat and cool your home for free (Very Green)?

asked:

How about geothermal, for every 100ft you get an average increase of 5 degrees.

Read about the Comstock mine, at 3000 ft down you have a temp of 200+ degrees. A hell of a place to work but if you’re looking for geothermal heat it’s a great example. Now the temps will vary based upon geography but if you go down far enough you’ll get plenty of heat.

Just drop in a coil on the end of two pipes, fill it full of some liquid that is not going to breakdown or corrode the pipes. Hook up a circulation pump and plug in a heat exchanger on the top end and vola, you could then place the heat exchanger into an existing forced air system. Should work as well as a heat pump, system would have to be pretty hefty for colder climates. I would guess that a good deep well drilling rig could reach those kind of depths.

Should save a great deal of energy, all you’re paying for is the electricity to run the pump and you might be able to go solar with the right array setup. I would suppose you could use the same system for hot water. Just make sure you’re using a submersible heat exchanger.

You know the same system would work for cooling also. You would just make it a shallow system, were the temps are in the 50 degree range.

I’ve got a schematic for the system laying around someplace. Let me know if you’re interested.

I’ve been meaning to use a similar setup under my driveway so I don’t have to shovel the snow off of it in the winter. Ah, another for the to do list.

Free heat free cooling.
Well there is a slight ;-) inital cost
Yes you could run the heat exchanger to a steam turbine, then a generator much the same way the nuke reactors work.
No the pump wouldn’t need to be massive, you’re just circulating not doing a “dead pull” no heavy head pressure required, In fact you might not even need a pump, for heating. Ergo heat rises cold falls…

Buying an air-conditioner $1500 vs. $4000 with same BTU?

John asked:

Does anyone know about air-conditioners? I’m living in Korea and I want to buy an A/C for my house. In Korea they are upright man-sized units with a separate outdoor . The prices here vary a great deal, from $1500-4000 for the same BTU. Is there any difference in A/C technology or am I just paying for brand and style? Some of the more expensive are “signature series” and have automated cleaning “robots” and fancy hepa filters.
The “robot” is just a little thing that brushes the filter periodically to keep it automatically cleaned. Seems like a gimmick to me when the guy demoed it.
